Maths

The main aim of the sessions is to boost your child’s confidence in mathematics. They will learn strategies to help them tackle maths problems more effectively.

It is a subject where making connections and seeing patterns is key to advancement. For example, if you know that 5 + 4 is 9 then you know that 500 + 400 is 900. It is also a subject where it is important to have the right foundations and understand how you can manipulate numbers to make them work for you. Even if there is only one right answer, there are many ways to get there.

Maths is also a very creative subject and a good question is one where there are multiple answers or multiple ways to get to the answer. I emphasise discussion and reasoning. It is so important. Understanding how to solve a problem is just as important as finding the answer.

English

My sessions are designed to help children improve their writing and their understanding of the English language. It is important that they enjoy writing and are engaged, curious and motivated. Therefore, I focus on topics that interest them. This could be their favourite sport, a favourite character or a hobby that they enjoy.

I explore a range of texts from stories to poetry to non-chronological reports. One element that makes a good writer is the ability to draw on a range of different styles. Therefore, we look at how to use adjectives, adverbs, alliteration, conjunctions, sentence openers and prepositions to name just a few. As well as writing skills, I also teach comprehension. Understanding how to locate and infer information from a text is vital.
